Saturnalia, which was the biggest roman feast of the year, was held between the 17th and the 23rd of december. It was the best of times with public banquets and private gift giving. Does this ring a bell ? Yule - Jul - Jol - was the Germanic modwinter month ranging from mid december to mid january. Within this period a big religious festival was held to celebrate the returning of the sun and the god odin. On the Bristish Islands they celebrated mother's night - Modranicht - towards the end of december.
And then came the Christians and fired the old gods, but who wants to say goodbye to a good party ? so some smart fellow came up with the idea that the son of the new god was born the last night of saturnalia, which was also a great way to give some credit to this ambitious deity. We of course remember that some old Hebrews has made the prophecy that their messiah would arrive on the planet earth the 24th of december. Some day, some day.
And who says no to good party ?
A good party means good music and Christian as well as post-Christian times have left a huge collection of great songs celebrating this dark time of the year.
